About our Tomatoes, Green (unripe)

As we come to the end of tomato season and we start removing our plants in preparation for winter, we harvest all remaining tomatoes that have not - and are unlikely to - ripen. These are unlike your summer, ripe tomato, but they shine in their own right. They require cooking to bring out their flavour.

Cooking Tips:

Green tomatoes are popular in various recipes. Traditionally in the UK they make the best chutney that will last you through the winter months. Spices like ginger, mustard seeds and vinegar transform the humble green tomato into a sensational condiment that pairs perfectly with cheeses.

Other condiments include green tomato ketchup, relish, pickles or salsa. But if preserves aren't your thing, there are loads of popular recipes that come out of America.

A simple way to cook them is by frying them. This softens and sweetens the green tomatoes and they make a great addition to fry-up or a sandwich. Battering them first adds an additional irresistible crunch. But one of our favourite ways to use them is to make a roasted green tomato soup, perfect for this time of the year.

Green tomatoes have a long shelf life, especially if kept in the fridge. Some might eventually start to ripen and colour up, but you can still use them as a green tomato!
