Onions, Tropea (Bunch)

Ah, our most favourite Tropea onion. As people are only really used to your traditional brown storage onion, they miss out on the world of flavour provided by specialist onion varieties. The Tropea onion is an Italian onion famed for its candy-sweet bulbs in the region of Calabria. The bulbs are eaten fresh and do not store as long as a brown onion, but they are full of natural sugars. They are so sweet, that you could eat the bulb raw like an apple! We adore this variety, and in a world where we have forgotten what great onions taste like, it is one of the few varieties we consider growing. Due to the high sweetness of the bulb, it can be enjoyed raw in salads and as garnishes. However, it can also be cooked like a normal onion and it caramelizes beautifully and quickly due to the high sugar content. Caramelize it first, and throw it into anything to elevate your cooking to the next level.
