About our Winter Squash, Kuri

Kuri Squashes (often called Uchikki Kuri Squash or Hokkaido Pumpkin) are a delicious culinary pumpkins/squash. They have a delicious, creamy and delicate flavour when cooked and are fantastic roasted, turned into soups, pureed or turned into pies. They don't get as crispy as our other squashes, but rather cook down and become soft, sweet and buttery. The skin is soft and edible when cooked, so no need to peel them like a butternut squash With all of our squashes, there really isn't a hurry to eat them. We cure them for a few weeks after harvest so they should last well into autumn and winter. In fact, they only get better as they age, maturing in flavour and becoming sweeter! Store them in a cool cupboard and they should last an age. If cut, store the excess in the fridge, wrapped in cling film, or in the crisper or an airtight container

The Pumpkin Dilemma

Squashes and pumpkins are something we truly adore but are hugely underrated in the UK. Unfortunately, pumpkins and squashes have a bad reputation due to Halloween. Due to the fact that many people buy carving pumpkins for October to carve into jack-o'-lanterns, many will attempt to eat the leftover carving pumpkins and turn them into soup, only to realise that 'Yuck! They taste horrible! I will never try them again'. Unfortunately, carving pumpkins are only bred for their uniform size, colour, thin flesh (which makes it easier to carve) and are not bred for taste, which makes them unpalatable. However, these beauties are prized for their buttery, sweet taste when cooked!
