Crown Prince squashes are an old time favourite squash that home gardeners will often be familiar with. They are a very large squash often reaching 10kg in weight. They have a grey skin, and and a bright orange flesh which is sweet and buttery when cooked. They are much loved for their storage ability- they have a thicker skin than other squashes (so we recommend peeling them before cooking) which can help them store beautifully well into the spring from an autumn harvest. The exciting thing about squashes, unlike other storage vegetables, is that they only improve with age. As they cure, they mature and sweeten, and often taste their best after Christmas.
As these squashes are so large, we offer them to customers by the slice (approx 1kg). These are best stored in an airtight container or in cling film in the fridge until you would like use them. They should last up to a couple of weeks as a slice in your fridge.
The Pumpkin Dilemma
Squashes and pumpkins are something we truly adore but are hugely underrated in the UK. Unfortunately, pumpkins and squashes have a bad reputation due to Halloween. Due to the fact that many people buy carving pumpkins for October to carve into jack-o'-lanterns, many will attempt to eat the leftover carving pumpkins and turn them into soup, only to realise that 'Yuck! They taste horrible! I will never try them again'. Unfortunately, carving pumpkins are only bred for their uniform size, colour, thin flesh (which makes it easier to carve) and are not bred for taste, which makes them unpalatable. However, these beauties are prized for their buttery, sweet taste when cooked!
